On 18 December 2018, European Causeway was on passage from Larne to Cairnryan when it encountered very strong winds and very rough seas, which caused the ship to roll heavily. For ships operating outside designated Emission Control Areas, The IMO, which stands for the ‘International Maritime Organisation’ has set a limit for sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships of 0.50% m/m (mass by mass) from 1 January 2020. The intention is to reduce the amount of sulphur oxide emanating from ships and is predicted to have major health and environmental benefits, particularly for areas close to ports and coasts.
